Obituary for William "Bill" Nikolychuk

William "Bill" Nikolychuk
William “Bill” Nikolychuk passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, Manitoba at the age of 92 years.
Bill was born to Wasyl and Lena Nikolychuk on the family farm in Parkerview, Saskatchewan on January 6, 1926. He was the ninth child born to a family of 13 children. He attended school only to grade two as he was needed to work on the farm.
In 1942, after Wasyl’s wife passed away, Wasyl moved his youngest nine children up north to The Pas, Manitoba where the four oldest sons had begun a wood cutting business. Bill was 14 at the time and went to work for his brothers’ business.
In 1945 Bill began working for Keystone Fisheries hauling frozen fish from South Indian Lake to Wabowden by Cat Train.
Bill began working for the CNR in 1953, retiring in 1985.
In 1950, Bill married Lucy Zablitney and brought his bride to the two room house he had built on Bignell Avenue. Little by little, more rooms were added until the family home was done. There they raised their two daughters Shaleen and Carleen.
Bill was always busy picking berries, tending his garden, going fishing and in his younger years he enjoyed hunting. Many of the Saskatchewan relatives to this day reminisce about visiting uncle Bill to go fishing. He was always generous with his garden produce sharing with family and the older member of the church.
Bill’s Ukrainian Catholic faith was important to him. He attended church faithfully and for years worked bingo at the Norlite Hall. He was the caretaker of the church for a time and would even take the priest out on fishing trips.
As Lucy’s health failed, Bill devoted himself to her. Always being at St. Paul’s for her and taking her for drives when he could until her passing in September 2011. Bill became a resident of St. Paul’s Personal Care Home in 2016.
Bill is survived by his daughters Shaleen (Wayne) Kruzer, Carleen Nikolychuk; grandchildren Kim Nikolychuk (Jonah Young), David (Kyra) Kruzer, Kristofer Kruzer (Kayla Bentley); great grandchildren Dante Young, Caydence and Brynleigh Kruzer; brothers Ted, Jim (Trudy); sister-in-law Adeline Kutney.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Lucy; parents Wasyl and Lena Nikolychuk; brothers Matt, Alex, John, Nick, George, Steve, Sam, Pete, Walter; sister Mary; son-in-law Roy Mason.
In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Bill’s life was held Saturday, February 3, 2018, 2:00 pm, at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, with Father Vijay Deivanayagam presiding.
Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Paul’s Residence Equity Fund, c/o Activities, Box 240, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K4, would be appreciated by Bill’s family.
