Obituary for Kevin Alfred Anderson

Kevin Alfred Anderson
On Sunday, September 16, 2018 at approximately 0105 hours Kevin Alfred Anderson, loving son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and co-worker to us all, died much too early, at 38 years of age. He was the only son of Donald Anderson and Debbie and George Leeper.
Kevin was born on Monday, September 24, 1979 in The Pas, Manitoba at St. Anthony’s Hospital. He spent his early years on Keewatin Street with many hours being spent at his good friend’s home Richard, Mike and Chris Gordillo. At the age of 9 years, the family moved to Clearwater Lake and he planned to never leave the lake.
Kevin started his career with the railroad at the age of 19. He comes from a long line of railroaders. He followed in the footsteps of his great-grandmother, one of the first women in Canada to work as a CN telegraph operator, and his grandfather and great uncle who also worked for CNR/VIA. Presently keeping with family tradition Kevin’s uncle Ken Hiatt and cousin Matt Hiatt, uncle Ralph Anderson and step-dad George Leeper have worked, or are currently working in the railroad industry. If you do the math, that is a total of 288 years so far!
He started as a Carmen’s helper. He eventually worked as a Machinist and earned his Railway Machinist Ticket. He worked in the offices as a RMI Clerk and then became a Conductor. Kevin eventually followed his grandfather’s Alfred Hiatt’s steps and became an Engineer. He currently was working as a Conductor/Engineer. He spoke highly of his coworkers and was so grateful for coworkers that he could depend on and look up to due to their many years of experience. He was a dedicated employee and valued and respected the fact that he worked in a safety critical job.
He loved spending time with family and friends whether it was boating, barbequing or sitting by the fire pit. He spent many hours on the lake with his brother-in-law BJ fishing and many hours by the fire with a good rum in hand. His most recent hobby was the stock market with his good buddy Paul. He enjoyed planning different trips he wanted to take including returning to the Philippines with his good friend Richard. He was also planning a trip to Las Vegas with his step- dad, George. Tragically this was his last week of work before starting his vacation.
Family means everything to Kevin. He was okay knowing his family was okay. He was known to make many phone calls just to see how everyone was doing. If you were one of the lucky ones he frequently called, one would expect to be greeted on the phone as hello potato head or buffalo back or hammer head to name a few.
Kevin never had any children of his own but never felt like he missed out. He would say, “I don’t need children, Kerri’s (sister) children are like my own.” He was there for Tyler, Jessica and Brandon’s milestones as they grew up. He was there for all the good times and the more difficult times. We are all so grateful he was able to be with us for his niece Jessica’s wedding three weeks ago.
He so loved his family and we so loved him. This family has been forever changed. We will miss his kind gentle spirit. We will miss his sense of humour and most of all we will miss the security of knowing our son, brother, uncle and friend is no longer here.
Kevin leaves behind to cherish his memory, his parents, father Donald Anderson, mother Debbie Leeper, step-father George Leeper; grandmother Lorrie Hiatt; sister Kerri Lajambe; brother-in-law BJ Lajambe; niece Jessica (Paul) Pillipow; nephews Tyler and Brandon (Regan) Lajambe; uncle Ken and aunty Patsy Hiatt of Winnipeg; cousin Kristen (Christopher) Werbeniuk and their children Lauklyn and Ridley of Gilliam; cousins Joel (Char) and Matthew (Leslie) Hiatt from Winnipeg.
Kevin was an uncle to his good friend Paul and Donna Salamandyk’s children; Seth, Riane, Anson and Lenah. Kevin is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins on the Anderson side of the family.
Kevin was predeceased by his grandparents Edith and George Anderson; grandmother Edna Leeper and grandfather Alfred Hiatt.
The family would like to thank the community for their out pouring of love and support. The many phone calls, visits, flowers and food is much appreciated. Thank You.
The funeral service was held Thursday, September 27, 2018, 11:00 am, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, with Rev. Dr. Rebecca Graham officiating. Thanksgiving for life was shared by Debbie Leeper (mom), Kristen Werbeniuk (cousin) and Ernie Foster (co-worker and teamster). Scripture readings were proclaimed by Jessica Pillipow (niece), BJ Lajambe (brother-in-law), Lorrie Hiatt (grandma).
A reception was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, The Pas, Manitoba.
Honorary Pallbearers were Chris Rushton, BJ Lajambe, Tyler Lajambe, Brandon Lajambe,
Paul Salamandyk, Richard Gordillo, Mike Gordillo, Chris Gordillo, Rusty Krys, Paul Pillipow, Joel Hiatt, Matt Hiatt, Chris Werebeniuk, and all Kevin’s Railroad co-workers and Kevin’s Teamster Brothers.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Precious Pet Kennels Spay and Neuter Fund, Box 539, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K6, would be appreciated by Kevin’s family.
