Obituary for Claudia Katherine Kerwin

Claudia Katherine Kerwin
Claudia Katherine Dickey was born Monday, February 9, 1931 to Claude and Helen Dickey. She was born in her parent’s home in Crandall, MB. Mom was the eldest of her siblings. She had a sister Sheila and a brother Johnny. She grew up on a farm close to Crandall. Her childhood home was a happy place to grow up. She lived on a farm so nature was important. Claudia, Sheila and Johnny would go a mile across the field to play with their closest neighbor and stay for dinner. They would also travel a few miles across the field to their aunt and uncles’ (Dorothy and Herb Johnston) and play with their cousins (Mary Helen, Neil and Brian). They would skate Saturday nights at the rink in town and on sloughs at home. Summertime they played tennis in town riding there on their bikes. One day she seriously hurt herself by riding her bike into a barb wire fence. Those days there weren’t ambulances so it was quite a tragedy! Her shins were scarred for life!
She attended elementary school up to grade 11 at Crandall, leaving to attend grade 12 at Brandon College where she later got a Bachelor of Arts. She worked as a Social Worker at the Provincial Building in Portage La Prairie. There she met Norman (22) and her (21), she fell in love with his big brown eyes and his great sense of humor. They were united in marriage January 16, 1954 at the Crandall United Church.
They started their family in 1954, Ken and then Jim in 1956. They moved to The Pas and had twins Donald and Dale 1961. Claudia spent the rest of her life as a homemaker, taking care of her four boys. Norman was traveling a lot then so Claudia was left alone most of the time raising the boys and fending for herself.
She spent the last 24 years living alone on Rall’s Island. Her hobbies included bird watching, reading, gardening and watching curling on TV. Claudia was also active with the United Church volunteering in the kitchen for various functions and teas. Claudia also canvased for the Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years. She gave up volunteering when she did not feel comfortable driving anymore and she did not like to put anyone out driving her around. Claudia was the type of person that always put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own. She was very unselfish. She was always battling with black birds and squirrels, trying to keep them away from the bird feeder. She once accidentally killed a squirrel with her cane trying to shoo it off the feeder.
Her favorite passion was feeding visitors drinks and snacks. Her loving grandchildren always showed up at grandma’s when they were hungry. She would never say her granddaughters were her favorite, but everyone knew it. She always wanted a daughter but got stuck with four boys.
Claudia was blessed with good health, a sharp mind and a long comfortable life. She would do any thing to help people out. She cherished her family, friends and neighbors.
Mom passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, MB, at the age of 87 years.
Claudia was predeceased by her loving husband Norman in 1992; mother and father Helen and Claude Dickey; sister-in-law Anita Dickey; and is survived by her four sons, Ken (Sharon) Calgary, Jim (Pat) Kelowna, Donald (Carol) The Pas, Dale (Delphine) The Pas; two younger siblings Sheila of Winnipeg and John of Killarney.
She will be lovingly remembered by her 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other extended family members; numerous friends and neighbors!
